Huh.
I just realized that for the first time ever I'm actually feeling like an adult. Apparently it took being a mom to finally feel like I could let myself grow up. It's nice.
I hate Wednesday's
fOh lawd, do I ever hate Wednesday's!
I used to love them too. When I was in college, I had Wednesday's off (not because of too much work to catch up on, more likely because they couldn't come up with any more ridiculous advertising / design courses to fill the time). Anyway, my body was totally conditioned to working 2 days, off 1, working two, off two. THAT was the life. Then, 5 years ago, reality settled in and I worked 5 days. No problem really, Wed. was never my bad day, Thursday always was. It was SO close to the end of the week, just not quite there.
Now though. Now Wednesday night is the night to gather the garbage. This takes an entire HOUR...we'll get to that later though...on to the day.
Lucky me, I got to wake up and rush into the "bawer" again (bath-shower, ugh). I didn't mind this so much on mat leave, but I guess that was because I could take my time. Now though, this totally blows. I got to see my boy in the morning again, getting him changed (which was a RIDICULOUS struggle this morning, that child just wanted to be naked today!), and brushing his teeth. After that he was handed off to Bo and I was off to work.
Work started getting busy for me today. Yeah. It was two o'clock before I even got out to grab lunch. I ran to Loblaws because Bo needed deodorant and Oliver needed a big boy toothbrush (no more finger brush, no more finger getting bitten while in said finger brush). Oh the way out I grabbed the lunch special, 3 chicken fingers and a side of wedges. Yum. I also added some scalloped potatoes!!! I haven't had those in forever and they were fantastic! Oh yeah, they also had a really spicy Thai dipping sauce available. Yum yum! So, I get back to the office, just get my lunch uncovered, and the fire alarm goes off (test). Arugh. Well, I wasn't going to let it go cold, so I balanced it quite skillfully in my left hand, and devoured it with my right. Much to the amusement of the entire office. Why I set my self up for this ridicule, I'll never understand.
Traffic was a joke today on the way home. Problems on the 401, so I got off ahead of them at the 427. Problems there so I took 409 back to 410 (and actually found a bit of a short cut doing that, yeah!), then big problems on the 400 so I got off at Teston and took Jane up to Aurora side road. Thankfully, all this fuckery only made me 10 minutes late picking up Oliver. I did leave work 5 minutes late today though, so now I figure that was karma. I'll never leave late again.
On the way home we stopped at the park for 10 minutes so that Oliver could go on the swing. I SO miss taking him to the park every day. I know, I miss about a million things that we used to do on a daily basis, but this ranks close to the top. Right under taking a nap at the same time. Lord I'm tired; but I digress. After that it was home to play for an hour. Oliver decided that today was the day he was going to climb up the back of his castle, and it did it on the first shot. We played with his trucks and blocks too, and he seemed strangely interested in his jumper, which he hadn't been for a while. I may have to put him in it tomorrow night before he completely out grows it. While he fooled around in the downstairs family room, I prepped dinner for tomorrow, making a marinade for a pork tenderloin (tomorrow's dinner is teriayki pork tenderloin with mini roast potatoes, cauliflower, and apple crisp for dessert). After all that playing it was time for a bottle, and I was FINALLY able to read Scaredy Squirrel to him. I am absolutely in love with this book, it's just so cute and funny! Oliver wasn't up for a nap today though. After reading his new book, with played with his new flash cards (for the first time when I help up a picture of a cat and dog, then asked him which one was the cat, he looked at it for a second, then gently put his index finger on the cat. Awesome!).
Daddy got home just has Oliver was hitting the floor to play with his Little People, so it was time for me to get dinner going. I still feel like crap, so I'm really glad to have this super easy dinner planned; I made what Bo calls Mexican lasagna. It's just that stupid box that has tortillas, cheese sauce and meat seasoning, so I just had to brown some meat, layer it with the tortillas, top with the cheese sauce, and bake. While that was browning / baking I did the litter box and gathered all the garbage and recycling. This takes SO long because of all the sorting. Our 1 bag limit is completely full with Oliver's diapers, 1 bag from the kitchen and the litter box. So yeah, it's mostly from the diapers, lol. Picking through all the garbage's in the house to sort paper recycling, plastic recycling, compost / green bin and garbage just sucks so, so much. Bo was great though, while I was doing this he go the table ready for dinner, cleaned up the front hall, and tidied up what he could in the kitchen. Big help!
Before we could eat though, I had to get Oliver's laundry going, and I wanted to tidy the upstairs family room because it was a war zone again with plastic casualties strewn across the coloured mat battlefield. I fear that Oliver gets overwhelmed sometimes at the mess he's created, lol
I almost forgot!!! Before Bo got home when we were playing downstairs, Oliver climbed up my leg wanting to walk. He grabbed my hands, walked over to his ball pit, let go and literally dove in head first. Like, arms in the air, full on dive, lol! I was on the phone with Bo while this was happening, and through my laughter all I could hear was Bo say Bazinga. Perfect.
Ok, so once everything was tidy we finally sat down for dinner. The last time I made this I loved it, but this time I just wanted feeling good and didn't want it. Oliver had a couple bites, but didn't seem like a fan, so I made him his very first peanut butter and jam (grape jelly) sandwich. He LOVED it, so much! After the first bite he just got this ridiculous smile on his face and kept taking full bites of it (another first, usually he just gums stuff to death, even though it has 8 teeth). After dinner we (Bo and I) tidied up the kitchen, then headed upstairs to relax, finally, at 8:45. I should point out that while tiding up, Bo made me some neo-citron to try and help with the cold. He's so good! I added a can of coke and 3 pieces of baklava to the mix.
We watched tv for an hour, then Bo put Oliver to bed while I folded his laundry. By the time I crawled under the covers the neo-citron was taking effect and I couldn't keep my eyes open to read even a paragraph. A nice change, though I hated falling asleep while Bo was still in the bath.
Only two more days until the weekend and I have my boy 24/7 again :)

A den of sick...blahhhhh
Day two of work was pretty much the same as day one, only today I was able to remember the password to my computer. Gold star! Still, it's insane how disconnected I feel to everything, like I know a secret no one else does and because of that being here is almost like an out of body experience, I'm here but I'm not here. I guess it would be easier to simply say that my heart is not in it.
I was ready to go super early this morning, and Oliver also woke up early, so I pretty much bee-lined it upstairs to whip him out of the crib. I thoroughly enjoyed getting him changed, brushing his teeth, and getting the last few things together with him. When I had to leave for work though Bo wasn't ready to take him yet, so I had to put Oliver back in his crib. He was fine, checking out his hippo and watching me walk down the stairs, but then I said "bye bye" and waved to him, and watched his face change to pure pain. His eyes darkened, his lip quivered, then he cried. Lord how he cried, and how it broke my heart into a thousand tiny pieces. I think they're still resting there on the stairs. That was just so hard, to see him get so upset, and yes, I know that 2 minutes later he would have been just fine, swung up into his Daddy's arms and heading downstairs for his milk, but still, it was just so hard for me.
And that set me up for the rest of my day. I felt horrible all day at work, realizing that seeing Oliver in the morning before leaving for work makes it's so much harder for me to get through the days. I spent hours today thinking about what he was doing at daycare, worrying that he wasn't being taken care of properly, worrying about what food he was getting for lunch, about how often his diaper was getting changed. Would she sing songs to him, explain things to him like I do. Would she play games that teach him animal names and sounds? I know the answers to these questions are probably no, and that just makes it even harder to sit here at work, when I would rather be at home with him. Soon. I keep telling myself soon. One year from now I'll be gearing up for a second maternity leave, our debt will be consolidated onto the mortgage, and I'll officially become a stay at home mom. 1 more year, it's really not that long. Right?
After work I zoomed back to Bradford to pick up my boy, with a warning from daycare that he's been crankier then normal, and hasn't napped. Oh, and apparently he doesn't like Lay's potato chips (check yes beside the box allowing me to worry about the "healthy" food he's supposed to be getting). What I didn't mention yet, is that I am now also sick. Quite sick actually with a horrendous cold. Thank's Oliver. My head feels three sizes too big because of the sinus congestion (and accompanying headache), and my throat is just killing me. Anyway, once we were home Oliver didn't really feel like playing, or reading any stories, so I filled a bottle up with milk and took him upstairs, changing him into some comfy pants, then laying him down in his bouncer. Yeah, he was cranky. He didn't want to sit, he didn't want to play, he didn't want to be held, he didn't want to be in his bouncer. He just didn't want anything, and this is very odd for Oliver, so I knew it was just because he was still sick. I finally got him to relax back in the bouncer and eat his bottle, all of it. Now he was back to my normal sweet boy; but he did want to cuddle. I grabbed his blanket and covered him up, then grabbed my blanket and covered me up, laying my head on the end of his bouncer on the couch. He plucked his soother out of his mouth, sticking it in mine (probably how I ended up sick, lol, but he likes to share). The last thing I remember was his taking it back for himself, then we were both asleep.
Bo got home around 7, waking me up accidentally, but I am a very light sleeper. Wilf wanted him to go up and see his "cabin" to be, so because Oliver and I were sleeping, he headed back out to get it over with. Oliver woke up about 7:20 and I gave him a quick bath, he didn't really want to be in there today. My poor boy, so out of character. After that I put him in his pj's, then we went downstairs to make his dinner (Bo's picking dinner up for us on his way home because I'm not feeling well. Best. Husband. Ever.). Because I didn't really have any meat easy to cook up, Oliver was getting breakfast for dinner, some cream of wheat, which he usually loves. Not today. Oh no, NOT today. He refused to eat any off it. So, I tried some puffs, and those were ok. This is where I get the worst mom ever award, or at least worst mom of the night. Oliver had a delicious, healthy, well balanced dinner of puffs, honey nut Cheerios, gold fish crackers, and a breakfast cereal bar (so I guess he did still have breakfast for dinner). At least he ate something though.
Perfect timing, Bo walked in the door with pizza just as Oliver was clearing off his tray for me (having finished all he wanted), and spraying cheerios all over the office floor (I dragged the high chair into the office while he ate so I could check email). I should have stopped him, because I really didn't want a cheerio carpet in there, but if was the first time I'd seen a genuine smile on his face all night, so I just let him enjoy.
Exhausted and still feeling sick we all headed upstairs. Oliver had his last bottle of the night, Bo and I ate our pizza, and I was a little disappointed in that new game show "Downfall". I don't know what I was expecting, but I was left underwhelmed. Bo put Oliver to bed as I crawled into our bed, so ready for a good nights sleep. I haven't prepped anything for tomorrow except Oliver's clothes, so it's going to be a bit of a mad dash in the morning. Oh well, I'll worry about it tomorrow.

Turkey Parmigina and Mini Banana Muffins
Turkey Parmigiana
This recipe is one that I've tucked into my "perfected" file. I basically cook a recipe over and over again, trying to simplify everything I can while making absolutely fantastic tasting food (taste always comes first though, I just save the time consuming dishes for weekends).
Prep Time: 10 minutes
Cook Time: 20 minutes (10 of which are in oven)
Serves: 4
Ingredients:
4 Turkey scaloppini (or chicken or veal, turkey is WAY cheaper though)
1 cup Panko bread crumbs
1/3 cup fresh grated parmigiana cheese
1 egg
Olive oil
1 jar of pasta sauce (Bo makes me use Ragu, lol)
1/3 cup grated mozzarella cheese
Steps:
1. Pre-heat your over to 400.
2. Put the bread crumbs and parmigiana cheese in a dish and mix well together. Put the egg in a second dish and whip up with a fork.
3. Dip each cutlet into the egg, and then put it into the bread crumb mixture. Make sure that they've evenly coated with crumbs. The panko crumbs won't look as uniform as regular bread crumbs, but the crunch? Oh la!
4. Heat some olive oil in a large, non-stick skillet (about 1/8" think coating). Make sure the oil it super hot, but not smoking. Look for it to start to shimmer on the surface, this is when you're ready to rock!
5. Put the cutlets into the pan, carefully! Always start with the chicken hitting the pan closest to you, then drop it down towards the back, this way you don't get splashed with boiling hot oil (trust me on this one). Cook each cutlet until well browned, about 3 or 4 minutes on each side over med-high heat. The best part about this, it's totally ok to flip it back and forth a couple of times (I always do), to make sure it's nice and brown!
6. As the turkey is cooking, pour your pasta sauce into a large rectangular baking dish. HINT: Line the dish with foil first, this makes for a really easy clean up! When the turkey is done, lay the cutlets in the sauce and then top each one with a sprinkle of the mozzarella cheese. Throw this puppy in the oven for 10 minutes, just until the cheese has melted and the sauce heated up. If you're in a rush, you can throw it under the broiler and it'll be ready in 3 - 5 minutes, just be careful that it doesn't burn!
NOTES: Don't put any sauce on top of the cutlets, as this gets rid of that incredible crunch that the panko crumbs adds. Instead, when you serve, put a nice dollop of sauce on the side for dipping, and if you want to go all fancy drag your spoon through it on a curve to make a tail.
For the garlic pasta with vegetables: Go to your freezer isle, buy a bag for $2, pour it into a pot with 1/2 cup of water and crank the heat for 6 minutes. Delicious!
Mini Banana Muffins
Prep Time: 5 minutes
Bake Time: 15 minutes
Makes: 48 mini muffins
Ingredients:
1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
3/4 cup brown sugar
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 egg
1/2 cup vegetable oil 1/2 cup plain yogurt (good substitutions are sour cream, or milk if you don't have either of those)
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 cup mashed ripe bananas (3 med bananas, 4 small bananas, make sure they're VERY ripe, mostly brown)
Topping:
2 tablespoons white sugar
Dash of cinnamonDirections:
1. Preheat your oven to 350.
2. In a medium bowl mix together the flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon and salt.
3. In a second, smaller bowl, mix together the egg, oil, yogurt and vanilla. Stir the wet mixture into the dry mixture until combined (It will seem quite stiff).
4. Mash the bananas in the bowl that the wet ingredients were in. Make sure that you mash them really well, then mix into the batter.
5. Drop by a spoon into mini muffin tins (filling 3/4 of the way up the sides)
6. Mix together the sugar and cinnamon for the topping, and just lightly dust the top of each muffin.
7. Bake for 15 - 17 minutes, until golden brown, and enjoy!
NOTES: If you want to make full size muffins, just increase the baking time to about 25 minutes. You can also add some chocolate chips, or toasted walnut pieces to these and it'll be DELICIOUS!
Back to Work
So, apparently it's been a year since Oliver was born. It sure as hell didn't feel like it.
I'd say that the alarm woke me up at 5:45, but I literally did not sleep last night, save for 15 minutes while Bo was in with Oliver around 4:30. My mind just couldn't quite grasp the fact that I was going to work the next morning, it just didn't seem real. Ok, it seemed a little real the night before as I ran around the house like a chicken with it's head cut off trying to remember everything that needed to be done to make the next day easier. Like prepping what I could for dinner, doing Oliver's laundry and actually folding it and putting it away, getting his clothes and food ready for Bo to bring to daycare the next morning, and getting my own clothes put out in the bathroom.
Recap time!
I rolled out of bed at 5:45 (but you knew that already) and had a quick bath because we still don't have a shower tiled in the new house. It's only been 8 months, no biggie, lol. From there it was downstairs to get the last of Oliver's breakfast put together; today he got cottage cheese with a raspberry swirl, cheerios, a blueberry and apple granola bar and two strawberry rice rusks. I pulled out of the driveway at 6:31 and make it to work for 7:15, 15 minutes early. Thank GOD I was right about traffic (I'd been talking out of my ass for the last year telling people that the drive would be the same as from our old house, I had no clue).
Work was work. Ok, not true, it was actually really weird. For the first hour or two I actually though "ok, this isn't so bad, I think I can do this", but then around 11am it really hit me: I don't want to be here. I never knew if I was built to be a Mom, I didn't know what you needed, or what to do to be a fantastic one before Oliver arrived. Now though? Now I know that I was meant to be a Mother. Every thought that I have relates to our boy and keeping him happy and healthy. I woke up every morning excited to go down the hall and pick him out of his crib, his big goofy smile greeting me with nothing but love each time. I would joke from the get-go that I wasn't going back to work, but now, I really wish I didn't have to. This time around it just isn't an option for us, we were stupid and racked up a bunch of debt moving into our new house (appliances, tiles, etc. We still don't have furniture in 50% of the rooms, so we didn't just buy whatever we wanted). Thankfully, we're in the process now of consolidating everything onto our mortgage (it just takes a bit of time because of appraisals and such, and we have to finish the tile first, which we can't afford to do right now).
Once all that is taken care of, hopefully by Christmas (hopefully a lot sooner, I'm just trying to avoid disappointment), we'll be om a much better position, and I will get to turn into that housewife and stay at home Mom that I never knew I wanted to be.
Ok, back to work. I didn't do much of anything all day. I couldn't remember and of my old passwords, I couldn't remember where anything was saved or even where I had placed my files on the server. It was really very strange, how foreign everything seemed. Crazy that you can work somewhere for 5 years, take a year off for maternity leave, and forget EVERYTHING. I left work at 4pm on the dot and headed home to get my boy. Thankfully, he was almost as happy to see me as I was to see him. We had to make a pit stop at Sobeys on the way home to get him some more organic milk for daycare as he was almost out, and because were there Momma picked up some Rocky Road ice cream for herself, and some bread for Daddy.
Once we got home, at 5:30, Oliver and I played with his toys for about a half hour, the slide was a big hit tonight, as were some of his little people toys upstairs. Oliver walked all the way from the couch to the console and into my arms. He's so sturdy now, he just doesn't realize yet that he can walk even when Bo or I aren't standing across the room with open arms waiting for him. Around 6 he had a bottle and then conked right out for a much needed nap, as he's still fighting quite a bad cold. It was at this time that I could Bo and my laundry going, then went downstairs to work on dinner. Well, first I made Oliver some banana mini-muffins for breakfast tomorrow. Bo got home just after 6:30 and kept me company while I cooked until Oliver woke up; then they both did. While I was finishing up with dinner Bo was feeding Oliver some of the shredded motzerella cheese, which he was loving up tonight! For dinner, we had turkey parmigiana and vegetables and pasta in a garlic sauce. Oliver still isn't feeling 100%, so he didn't eat a ton of the chicken, maybe 5 pices, but he did enjoy the vegetables and a couple of muffins.
After dinner I finished up with the laundry, folding it and putting it away (so proud of myself here, because I would rarely do it right away before, ending up in wrinkled clothes all the time because the iron and I, we don't get along). Next it was time to get everything prepped for dinner tomorrow night (I also took a pork tenderloin out to defrost in the fridge so I can marinate it tomorrow night for Wed. nights dinner), then get Oliver's breakfast asready as possible, and the dishes going. Upstairs next to lay out both Oliver's and my clothes for the next day at daycare and work, and then finally, at 9:45, I got to lay on the couch with my ice cream and watch the last 15 minutes of The Big Bang Theory. I was in bed by 10:15 and curled up with The Thorn Birds, which I am loving right now. Now great for going to sleep though, it's certainly hard to put down.
Oh dear lord.
Where in the F*&% did the last 6 months go? I mean, I lose everything, but six months? That's even a little much for me.
So, life's been fantastic, the house is great, blah blah blah. My son, my BABY, had his first half day of daycare yesterday. This, in anticipation of my going back to work on Monday. Here's a riddle for you: what do you get when you combine Oliver with daycare, a house without Oliver in it, and Oliver's favorite Mickey shoes strewn about haphazardly by the front door.
A Momma that isn't willing to spend 5 hours inside by herself.
It went down like this (understand that I do NOT want to go back to work, but I've got to, that's another post for another day). I drove home (all two minutes), admitedly a little teary eyed. I opened the door, saw Oliver's shoes, listened to the silence, turned around, locked the door and got back into the car. I just could not do it. So I drove. I drove slowly down back country roads, and suddenly I was in Barrie, at the waterfront. But this wasn't far enough. So, I drove, slowly, down more country roads. Now I was at the cottage, but still, not far enough. So, I drove, slowly, into Orillia. Then I parked. I went for a nice walk down the main street, I dipped into my favourite shop and spent an hour touching every kitchen gadget on their shelves. I purchased a slice of cake (yes, it was only 9am, what's your point?), and I made a note of all the different types of jam they had.
Then I walked down to wilkies bakery. They make the BEST buttertarts (next to mine, of course), and something good actually happened. They had just come out of the oven and weren't even packaged yet. So yummy. Next, I drove down to the water front and went for a walk and ate my slice of cake (too much icing). I finally got back in the car and headed home. I walked in the door at 11:30, tidied up the kitchen, and went to get Oliver at noon. He was exhausted too, from all the fun he had, so at 1 we both had a nap. A three and a half hour long nap (a record for Oliver).
Today, well, it all started again, only I couldn't run to the bakery, because a guy is coming to fix my over between 8 and 10, so here I sit, very bored with no Oliver to play with, in a very VERY quiet house. But I've got a plan, after the guy leaves I'm heading out to scope out splash pads to take Oliver to when I pick him up :)
